About the Alberta Party

The Alberta Party is a new political movement dedicated to transforming government through citizen engagement. Instead of representing a particular segment of the traditional political spectrum, the Alberta Party seeks out the best ideas, regardless of whether they are perceived to be from the left or the right. As a result, we are attracting thousands of Albertans from all regions, urban and rural, of all ideological backgrounds, including those who have never been involved in a political party. Traditional parties focus on what divides us. We focus on the common ground that unites us.

None of the traditional parties have proven willing or able to move beyond ideology to face the challenges and opportunities that will emerge over the next decade and beyond. We need a new party that can be adaptable and forward thinking – that is the basis upon which the Alberta Party was conceived.

Our six core principles form the foundation of our policy development process. An Alberta Party government will listen to Albertans, especially those most directly affected by an issue, gather the best available information and conduct rigorous analysis prior to making decisions.

Our policy is constantly being enhanced through discussion and input from a wide range of Albertans. We have released policy documents about all major areas of provincial responsibility, including Health, Municipalities,
Democratic Renewal, Education, Energy and Environment.

We also believe that an effective government requires effective MLAs. We have released MLA Guidelines that reverse the role of the MLA from being a spokesperson for their party to their constituents, to being a true representative of their constituents in the legislature.

Our Principles

Prosperity

We believe that private enterprise and entrepreneurship are the keys to our economic success. The government should foster an environment which facilitates economic investment, reduces red tape and encourages creativity.

Fiscal Responsibility

We believe that government must use public dollars as effectively and efficiently as possible. The government should balance the books and set aside money for a rainy day. This is best accomplished through long-term planning, common sense and transparency.

Social Responsibility

We believe every Albertan deserves the opportunity to succeed. Our government should aspire to provide excellent and innovative public education, public health care, and infrastructure, as well as a compassionate helping hand in times of need. We believe this can be accomplished through responsible use of public funds.

Sustainability

We believe that sustainability must be a core value of government. Rethinking unsustainable practices, making strategic investments in research and technology, and implementing smart policy choices will protect and enhance our environment for future generations.

Democracy

We believe that public business should be conducted in public. Government should ensure that the legislative process is open, fair, transparent and inclusive of the people it governs. Our government should foster debate, actively engage citizens, and make itself accountable to the people it governs.

Quality of Life

We believe that a great quality of life requires strong communities. Through support of recreation, sports, arts and culture, government can help to build strong and vibrant communities.
